About this template

Long to-do lists are a way of feeling busy. This planner is built around the opposite idea: three tasks that would make the day a success, written before anything else, and a single block of protected time to do the hardest one. The morning half takes two minutes. The evening half asks which of the three got done and what stole the time from the ones that did not, which is the question that improves tomorrow’s plan.

It fits anyone with a job that fills the day if you let it: freelancers, managers, students, people working from home. Because the “tasks done” number is charted in Stats, you get an honest weekly hit rate instead of a vague sense of being behind. Most people find three a day is realistic and five is not.

How to use it

  1. Write the three tasks before opening email. Email will rewrite your list for you if you let it.
  2. Put the hardest task in the deep-work block and treat that time like a meeting.
  3. The “saying no to” line is for the thing you would normally get sucked into.
  4. Score the day honestly in the evening. A run of twos is information, not failure.
